Civil company and asset ownership review
A société civile particulière can be considered when a family needs a defined framework for holding assets and passing interests between generations. Its purpose, governing documents and the location of the underlying assets matter more than the label. A straightforward personally held portfolio may remain appropriate in other cases.
Monaco's personal income-tax position does not remove foreign property taxes, investment withholding or the rules applying to French nationals. Business profits and company activity also need separate treatment. Establish the ownership problem before choosing an entity.
Country facts to keep in view
- Personal income tax
- 0% for most residentsFrench nationals are generally subject to French income tax; residence must be genuine.
- Company tax
- 25% where applicableGenerally covers industrial/commercial businesses with over 25% of turnover outside Monaco and certain IP activities.
- Dividend tax
- 0% personal income taxFrench-national and source-country taxes can change the result.
A situation worth reviewing
A family with property and investments in several countries may want clearer control and succession arrangements. A civil company is one topic to review alongside wills, beneficial ownership and the tax classification of every family member, especially those with US connections.
For UK assets and UK connections
HMRC confirms there is no UK–Monaco double-taxation agreement. Review UK residence, retained income and the particular pension under the applicable domestic rules rather than assuming a treaty exemption. Keep source documents and proposed withdrawal dates available before moving money or changing a provider’s withholding instructions.
For US persons
Monaco has no comprehensive income-tax treaty listed by the IRS. American citizenship and account rules therefore need their own review. Keep 401(k), traditional IRA, Roth and brokerage assets distinct, and check US entity or PFIC treatment before using a Monaco company or non-US investment.
Before changing an arrangement
Begin with the ownership or succession problem the structure is intended to solve. Compare direct ownership with the proposed company, including asset-transfer consequences, records, administration and rules affecting each owner abroad. A favourable Monaco personal-tax position does not remove source-country pension tax or establish that a company improves the family’s overall position.

UK accounts
UK ISA! Review / opportunity
Keep UK relief and check source-country exposure
The ISA can retain UK relief abroad, but provider access and contribution restrictions still matter.
Monaco’s personal-income-tax position does not remove taxes elsewhere or French nationality rules. There is no UK-Monaco income-tax treaty.
Worth exploring: A simple existing ISA may be worth keeping rather than restructuring.
Ask a planner: Does retaining the ISA fit my longer-term and possible return plans?

General investment account! Review / opportunity
Source-country tax still matters in Monaco
Monaco residence does not remove foreign withholding or remaining UK obligations.
Check actual residence, nationality and each source of income. A UK-Monaco information-exchange agreement is not an income-tax treaty.
Worth exploring: A source-income and ownership review may help without a new wrapper.
Ask a planner: Which countries still tax income or disposals from this portfolio?

UK onshore bond! Review / opportunity
Check what the UK policy still costs after moving
Monaco residence does not reverse insurer-level taxation or automatically establish a surrender exemption elsewhere.
Review the actual contract, tax residence and any possible return to the UK. Temporary non-residence can bring policy gains into UK tax later.
Worth exploring: A cost and withdrawal review can be useful without adding another structure.
Ask a planner: Would retaining or surrendering the policy be better after all tax and charges?

Offshore investment bond! Review / opportunity
Check withdrawal timing and any UK return
A period abroad does not make every offshore-policy gain permanently free of UK tax.
HMRC has specific temporary non-residence rules. Confirm the contract, true residence and any French nationality exposure before a surrender.
Worth exploring: Consider withdrawal timing before changing the policy.
Ask a planner: Could this gain be taxed when I return to the UK?

UK operating business! High priority
Personal tax and business profits are separate
A UK company does not become tax-free because its owner lives in Monaco.
Review UK residence, where work is done and Monaco business-profits tax. There is no UK-Monaco income-tax treaty to resolve an assumed dual-residence outcome.
Worth exploring: Review the operating model before choosing another corporate layer.
Ask a planner: Where will the business actually operate and be managed?

US accounts
US brokerage account! Review / opportunity
A Monaco move does not erase US portfolio tax
US taxpayer status and source-country investment tax still need checking.
Review the actual holdings, withholding and any proposed non-US funds. French nationality or continuing French tax links can alter the picture.
Worth exploring: An existing US portfolio may avoid the complexity of a new foreign structure.
Ask a planner: What does each country still tax in this portfolio?

International structures & other assets
International trust! High priority
A trust needs source and family-country review
Monaco residence does not settle tax and reporting where the assets or family members are located.
The deed, roles and distributions require personal review. US connections may add foreign-trust reporting, with exceptions that must be checked. No tax saving is calculated here.
Worth exploring: Review the existing deed before making distributions or adding another trust.
Ask a planner: Who controls the trust and who can receive its benefits?

International pension / QNUPS! High priority
An international pension needs scheme recognition
QNUPS, QROPS and other foreign pension labels do not establish the destination’s tax treatment.
The scheme’s jurisdiction, funding, access rules and recognition must be checked. US owners can face foreign-trust and reporting questions. No numeric saving is calculated.
Worth exploring: Compare the existing pension and portfolio before paying for another scheme.
Ask a planner: Does the exact scheme and planned payment qualify in every relevant country?

Overseas holding company! High priority
Review the company and its owners separately
A foreign holding company does not establish residence, treaty entitlement or tax-free distributions.
Management, activity, ownership and local classification need personal review. US connections can add foreign-company and reporting obligations. This tool does not model company or shareholder tax.
Worth exploring: Review the present structure before adding administration and costs.
Ask a planner: What genuine purpose and operating substance does this company have?

Other / overseas asset! Review / opportunity
Bring this account into a personal review
This account is visible in your map but is outside the supported tax assessment.
Its legal form, jurisdiction and owner determine the answer. We do not infer pension, insurance or investment relief from an unfamiliar account name.
Worth exploring: A planner can review the actual arrangement alongside the rest of your map.
Ask a planner: What documents would help a planner classify this account?
