Foreign-source assets and QNUPS review
For a foreign national resident in the Philippines, the source of income is a central starting point. Genuine foreign-source receipts can have different treatment from Philippine-source earnings. A UK account label does not by itself establish that source or create a new local tax charge.
A QNUPS is a qualifying non-UK pension scheme under UK rules, not a universal Philippine exemption or a product every retiree needs. Review the existing investment position first. If income is already outside the local tax base, adding pension fees may not produce the saving someone expects.
Country facts to keep in view
- Personal income tax
- 0–35%; foreign-source exempt for aliensResident citizens are taxed worldwide. Foreign nationals generally pay Philippine tax only on Philippine-source income.
- Company tax
- 25%; 20% for qualifying small companiesSmall domestic-company thresholds, incentives and minimum corporate tax can affect the result.
- Dividend tax
- 10% domestic for resident individualsNon-resident alien rates differ. Foreign-source dividends are generally outside Philippine tax for foreign nationals.
- Foreign pension tax
- Generally 0% for foreign-national residentsApplies where the pension income is genuinely foreign-source. Philippine citizens, source-country and US rules differ.
A situation worth reviewing
A British person with an ISA and a UK pension should compare keeping the accounts with any proposed international pension. Identify an actual benefit in taxation, retirement design or succession after costs. Do not assume that the ISA becomes locally taxable merely because the person has moved.
Foreign pension treatment and SRRV planning
Start by distinguishing private pensions, state benefits, government-service pensions and investment withdrawals. Confirm the source and the tax rights of the paying country, including any treaty conditions. A local foreign-income exemption does not automatically remove source-country withholding or continuing US tax.
The SRRV is a separate immigration programme. Age, deposit, pension and documentation requirements depend on the current category. Assess those requirements alongside healthcare, a surviving partner's position and the cost of maintaining access to UK or US providers.
Income today, flexibility tomorrow
A retiree can be comfortable with the local tax headline yet still need treaty paperwork or a provider that will service an overseas address. Resolve those practical matters before requesting a major pension payment or transferring savings.
For UK assets and UK connections
Keep UK departure reporting, pension classification and provider access in the same review. The Philippine source rules must be applied to the actual receipt, not inferred from an ISA or pension label. A British account is not automatically made locally taxable by the move.
Compare retaining existing accounts with any proposed QNUPS after costs and actual benefits. Review the paying country and treaty paperwork before requesting a major payment.
For US persons
A Philippine foreign-source exemption does not establish exemption for a US citizen or resident alien. Review the US Philippines treaty for the actual receipt and personal circumstances rather than apply one answer to IRAs, Roth accounts, 401(k)s and ordinary investments.
Check PFIC exposure and foreign trust or pension classification before purchasing or transferring into an international arrangement. Local recognition is only one part of the analysis.
Before changing an arrangement
Compare the existing position with the proposed arrangement after fees, taxes and access restrictions. Keep a simple record of who owns each asset, where income arises and when it will be used. A lower headline rate is only useful if the account or regime qualifies and the structure remains appropriate when your plans change.

UK ISA! Review / opportunity
Check the ISA before buying a new wrapper
Foreign-source returns may already fall outside Philippine tax for a non-citizen.
The rule differs for Philippine citizens. A foreign portfolio is not automatically subject to a flat 15% local gains tax. Establish Philippine citizenship and income source. A foreign national and a resident Philippine citizen do not have the same income-tax scope.
Worth exploring: Compare keeping the ISA with any proposed pension structure; extra costs need a reason.
Ask a planner: Can the ISA be kept, and how are its underlying returns treated locally?

UK pension / SIPP! Review / opportunity
Establish the pension exemption and treaty claim
Foreign pension benefits can qualify for local relief, but nationality, residence and the payment matter.
Section 32(B)(6)(c) contains a foreign-benefits exclusion with conditions concerning recipients and permanent residence. The UK treaty separates pensions for past employment from government-service payments. Confirm the scheme, payment and claim rather than assuming every foreign pension is exempt.
Worth exploring: Check relief on the existing pension before proposing a QNUPS or transfer.
Ask a planner: Does this payment qualify under the domestic benefits rule and the UK treaty?

General investment account! Review / opportunity
A foreign portfolio may already be efficient
For a non-citizen, genuinely foreign-source returns are different from Philippine-source income.
The rule differs for Philippine citizens. A foreign portfolio is not automatically subject to a flat 15% local gains tax. Establish Philippine citizenship and income source. A foreign national and a resident Philippine citizen do not have the same income-tax scope.
Worth exploring: Review the existing GIA before incurring overseas pension or trust costs.
Ask a planner: Are you a Philippine citizen, and where do the underlying returns arise?

UK onshore bond! Review / opportunity
Review the onshore policy before withdrawals
Assess the local classification of your onshore or offshore investment bond. A UK withdrawal calculation does not determine the destination’s treatment.
Review policy proceeds using the foreign-national source rules. Compare the existing policy’s costs and access with any proposed pension structure. Check the specific insurer, payment type and any planned UK return. Establish Philippine citizenship and income source. A foreign national and a resident Philippine citizen do not have the same income-tax scope.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the existing foreign assets before paying for another structure.
Ask a planner: What is capital, what is a policy gain and which country can tax the payment?

Offshore investment bond! Review / opportunity
Review the offshore policy contract
Assess the local classification of your onshore or offshore investment bond. A UK withdrawal calculation does not determine the destination’s treatment.
Review policy proceeds using the foreign-national source rules. Compare the existing policy’s costs and access with any proposed pension structure. Check the specific insurer, payment type and any planned UK return. Establish Philippine citizenship and income source. A foreign national and a resident Philippine citizen do not have the same income-tax scope.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the existing foreign assets before paying for another structure.

UK operating business! High priority
Your move and your company are separate tax questions
Running a UK company from the Philippines can create local company or permanent-establishment questions while UK obligations continue.
A UK incorporated company does not automatically stop being UK resident when its owner moves. Assess where decisions and work occur, then check the country treaty and local business rules.
Worth exploring: Review actual governance, operations and remuneration before changing the ownership structure.
Ask a planner: Where will the business actually be managed and operated?

US accounts
401(k)! Review / opportunity
Assess the existing 401(k) distribution plan
The US-Philippines treaty can preserve source-country taxation of periodic private pensions.
Article 18 is different from residence-only pension treaties. Confirm that the payment is periodic pension income and check the separate Philippine foreign-benefits exclusion. US citizenship taxation and nonresident withholding require their own assessment.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the existing retirement account and coordinating withdrawals before considering a transfer.
Ask a planner: How would each 401(k) distribution be treated in both countries?

Traditional IRA! Review / opportunity
Classify each traditional IRA withdrawal
Periodic IRA distributions need US treaty classification and a separate Philippine benefits assessment.
The US treaty explanation includes retirement accounts within periodic private pension treatment. A one-off withdrawal needs its own category. Philippine citizenship or permanent-residence conditions can change domestic relief.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the existing retirement account and coordinating withdrawals before considering a transfer.
Ask a planner: Which part of the IRA withdrawal is taxable, and how is it classified locally?

Roth IRA! Review / opportunity
Will the Roth treatment travel with you?
Review foreign-national source treatment and US qualification separately. The older treaty is not an explicit blanket Roth exemption.
Philippine foreign-national source rules and the foreign-benefits exclusion may matter. The older treaty is not explicit blanket Roth recognition. Confirm qualified US treatment and local classification of the exact payment.
Worth exploring: Review the existing Roth before making transfers, conversions or replacement arrangements.
Ask a planner: Does the exact account and payment qualify for destination relief?

US brokerage account! Review / opportunity
A favourable local source rule may leave US tax
Foreign nationals’ genuinely foreign-source returns can be treated differently from Philippine-source income, while US worldwide taxation may continue.
Confirm citizenship and source before converting investments into a new overseas wrapper. US taxpayers should check non-US funds for PFIC requirements before changing investments. Establish Philippine citizenship and income source. A foreign national and a resident Philippine citizen do not have the same income-tax scope.
Worth exploring: Compare a straightforward US-compatible portfolio with the costs of added wrappers.
Ask a planner: Would additional structure change the combined result?

International structures & other assets
International trust! High priority
A trust needs a personal review
The deed, settlor, trustees and beneficiaries determine the questions to investigate.
Review local attribution, distributions, source and succession. A US person may have foreign-trust reporting and tax obligations. This tool assigns no trust tax rate or saving.
Worth exploring: Compare the existing trust with simpler ownership only after reviewing the deed.
Ask a planner: Who controls the trust and who can benefit before and after the move?

International pension / QNUPS! Review / opportunity
Recognise the pension before modelling a benefit
An international pension or QNUPS needs scheme-specific review.
A recognised foreign pension may benefit locally, but a non-citizen may already have favourable treatment of foreign investments. Check citizenship, source and pension recognition before suggesting QNUPS. For US persons, foreign-plan recognition and reporting need separate checks. No numerical saving is assigned.
Worth exploring: Retaining existing accounts remains a valid comparison where another structure adds costs.
Ask a planner: What legal recognition and treaty treatment apply to the scheme and payments?

Overseas holding company! High priority
Review the entity and actual management
Foreign incorporation alone does not establish the combined tax result.
A foreign company carrying on Philippine activities needs local business and source analysis. A company is not interchangeable with an individual foreign-source exemption. US owners also need foreign-company reporting and classification review. No numerical saving is assigned.
Worth exploring: Consider a company only where its commercial and planning benefit justifies the obligations.
Ask a planner: Where is the entity managed and which people own or control it?
Sources & conditions

Other / overseas asset! Review / opportunity
Bring this asset into the planner discussion
Other overseas accounts are recorded without an automated tax assessment.
The tool has not researched this specific contract. Its legal jurisdiction, owner, rights and payment records need individual review, including any continuing US obligations.
Worth exploring: Use the map to prepare a focused review rather than infer treatment from another account.
Ask a planner: What documents establish the asset’s legal form and the owner’s rights?
Sources & conditions

Make the conversation useful.
- Would a QNUPS provide a documented benefit beyond the treatment my existing foreign assets already receive?
- Which pension payments qualify as foreign-source and what SRRV and provider requirements would we need to maintain?
- What would change if I moved again or returned home?
