Work pass and permanent residence
Employment permissions have conditions relating to the applicant, role and employer. Permanent residence is a separate assessment with category and individual criteria. Do not treat an investment account or a property purchase as an automatic residence route.
Confirm dependent permissions, the position if employment ends and the implications of longer-term status for family members. Tax residence, immigration and any future citizenship application should be recorded separately in the plan.

Housing, schooling and foreign-resident cover
Rent and school choice can dominate an expatriate household's Singapore budget. Price the location and commuting pattern you intend to use, with utilities, transport and trips abroad. If considering property, obtain advice on eligibility and additional buyer taxes before using a purchase price as the full cost.
Review employer healthcare for the whole household, including dependent limits and the position after a job ends. Public coverage and subsidies vary by status. A private premium should reflect actual cover needs, rather than being assumed to give access to every provider or treatment.

Adjust the lifestyle budgetConfirm healthcare access before relying on it
MediShield Life covers citizens and permanent residents; other foreigners should arrange appropriate cover. Public provision, insurance and out-of-pocket charges need separate checks. Obtain a quote for your age, medical history and required cover; the budget tool is an allowance rather than an insurance quotation.
Residence and citizenship are separate decisions
Adult applicants are generally at least 21. Approval is discretionary; nationality and national-service implications matter. Check how your chosen permit counts towards any later application and what absences are allowed. Buying a property or paying an application fee is not an assurance that citizenship will follow.
Before leaving or returning to the UK
Review UK departure reporting and the actual pension type before requesting relief. Article 18 of the UK Singapore treaty includes a subject-to-tax condition; a local foreign-income exemption does not establish automatic exemption in both countries. Government-service payments have separate treaty treatment.
Record the Singapore treatment and relevant claim evidence, and ask existing pension and investment providers about servicing a Singapore address before a withdrawal or transfer.
US connections continue to matter
Singapore is not on the IRS comprehensive income-tax treaty list reviewed for this article. US citizens and resident aliens can retain US obligations despite local relief. SRS participation should not be described as automatic US tax deferral.
Review the arrangement and its underlying holdings before contributing or investing. Foreign funds can create PFIC classification and reporting questions, while custodian access and future distributions need their own assessment.
BRING THESE QUESTIONS
Make the conversation useful.
- What happens to our Singapore permission and family arrangements if employment changes?
- What housing, education and medical commitments would remain if our Singapore benefits changed?
- Which commitments should I delay until permission and healthcare are confirmed?
