401(k), IRA and investment-account review
A 401(k) and an IRA are different retirement arrangements with their own contribution, access and distribution rules. An employer plan is not available merely because someone chooses to live in the US. Compare the actual plan with other eligible savings options and money needed before retirement.
Before arriving with foreign investments, identify funds, insurance policies, trusts and companies that may have adverse US classifications or reporting. A familiar tax-efficient product in another country may create a different result after US residence begins. Review the existing assets before replacing them or making a large disposal.
Country facts to keep in view
- Personal income tax
- 10–37% federal + state/local taxProgressive rates on taxable ordinary income. Citizenship and US residence generally bring worldwide taxation.
- Company tax
- 21% federal + state taxStandard C-corporation rate. Pass-through businesses and large-company minimum taxes follow different rules.
- Dividend tax
- 0% / 15% / 20% qualified dividendsOrdinary dividends use ordinary rates. The 3.8% net investment income tax and state taxes can apply.
- Foreign pension tax
- Usually taxable; treaty exceptionsDistributions can be fully or partly taxable; account reporting, contributions and treaty classification require review.
A situation worth reviewing
A British employee moving to America may have a UK pension, an ISA holding non-US funds and access to an employer 401(k). The first decision is not which account to transfer. It is how each existing holding is classified in the US, which provider will serve a US resident and what the new employer actually offers. Contribution eligibility is separate from the tax treatment of old savings.
Pension distributions, Roth status and treaties
Retirement planning starts with the account type and the owner's tax status. Traditional and Roth arrangements have different rules, and a foreign country may not mirror US treatment. Required distributions, early access and beneficiary arrangements need separate consideration.
A rollover, Roth conversion or foreign pension transfer can be a significant tax event. Compare the current and proposed residence countries, applicable treaty provisions and reporting before proceeding. Withholding is not always the final liability and can depend on documentation.
Income today, flexibility tomorrow
An American returning from Britain may have a Roth IRA and a UK workplace pension. A qualified Roth distribution has specific US rules, while the British pension needs its own US and treaty analysis. A conversion before the return, a later withdrawal and a transfer between schemes are different events. Compare them against the intended US state as well as the federal position.
For UK assets and UK connections
For a British pension, examine the UK-US treaty provisions for the exact payment, including whether it is regular income or a lump sum. A UK tax-free element is not automatically exempt in the US. For an ISA, review the underlying holdings: its UK exemption does not create a US wrapper exemption, and non-US funds may be PFICs. Review retained UK income and the departure-year residence position as well.
For US persons
For US citizens, a period abroad normally does not remove federal worldwide-income obligations. Returning changes practical account access and can change state exposure. Preserve records for retained foreign pensions and accounts, including contribution history. FBAR and other information reporting can apply independently of a current tax bill. Do not assume that closing an account removes the reporting for the year.
Before changing an arrangement
Bring the plan documents, beneficiary designations, account basis and the intended destination state to the review. Ask which distributions are required, which are optional and what a rollover or conversion would change. Pension treaty treatment, foreign reporting and the cost of implementation should be documented before authorising a transaction.

UK accounts
UK pension / SIPP! Review / opportunity
UK pension recognition must be established
The US-UK treaty addresses qualifying pension growth and payments, with different treatment for contributions and lump sums.
Check the actual scheme, state treatment and treaty eligibility. A UK tax-free label is insufficient to establish the federal treatment of every payment or eliminate reporting.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the UK pension with a coordinated withdrawal plan.
Ask a planner: Which treaty protections apply to this scheme and payment?

General investment account! High priority
Review investments before US tax residence
A UK brokerage account has no general US wrapper exemption. Underlying investments determine the US result.
Document cost basis and income. Non-US pooled investments can trigger PFIC tax and reporting, while direct shares need their own review. A UK account address alone says little about the securities.
Worth exploring: Compare existing holdings with a portfolio suitable for US tax residence.
Ask a planner: Which holdings and acquisition records need attention?

UK onshore bond! High priority
UK tax-paid policy status may not carry to the US
A UK investment bond needs a US contract-classification review before assuming tax deferral.
Insurance qualification, investor control, fund exposure and reporting can differ. UK tax treated as paid on a policy gain does not automatically create a matching US credit.
Worth exploring: Review the policy before surrender, further premiums or residence change.
Ask a planner: How is this precise contract classified for US tax?

Offshore investment bond! High priority
A foreign policy is not automatically US compliant
The issuing jurisdiction and UK withdrawal rules do not establish US life-insurance or annuity treatment.
Obtain the policy wording and holdings. Contract qualification and control tests need assessment before relying on deferral, alongside relevant foreign-asset reporting.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the contract with a documented US-compatible alternative.
Ask a planner: Would US rules recognise the intended policy treatment?

UK operating business! High priority
UK company ownership can add US reporting and tax
A US taxpayer with a UK company needs an ownership, entity-classification and controlled-company review.
Foreign-company reporting and current income inclusions may apply before dividends. Working from the US also raises business-presence questions. Ownership thresholds and attribution matter.
Worth exploring: Review company ownership and operating arrangements before relocating.
Ask a planner: What US filings and inclusions could my company create?

US accounts
401(k)! Review / opportunity
Check the 401(k) income and rollover options
Traditional 401(k) distributions generally enter the US tax calculation; basis and exceptions can change the amount.
Review plan access, required distributions and early-distribution rules. A rollover into a foreign pension is not automatically an eligible US rollover. State treatment requires a separate check.
Worth exploring: Compare retaining the plan with eligible domestic rollover choices.
Ask a planner: How does this plan fit my other retirement income?
Sources & conditions

Traditional IRA! Review / opportunity
Separate IRA basis from taxable withdrawals
Traditional IRA distributions depend on contribution basis, required distributions and applicable exceptions.
Review nondeductible contributions and prior conversions. Transfers, distributions and Roth conversions have different consequences; the tool does not select one for you.
Worth exploring: Compare withdrawal timing while preserving the existing account where useful.
Ask a planner: What records are needed before planning withdrawals or a conversion?
Sources & conditions

Roth IRA! Review / opportunity
Preserve qualified Roth treatment
Qualified Roth IRA distributions can be exempt under US rules. Nonqualified payments follow ordering and early-payment rules.
Confirm the relevant five-year period and qualifying event. Conversions and new contributions are separate decisions; a foreign pension does not replicate Roth status.
Worth exploring: Keep a suitable Roth and coordinate its use with taxable income.
Ask a planner: Would my intended payment qualify?

US brokerage account! Review / opportunity
Look through the broker to the investments
Income, gains, holding periods and cost basis determine the taxable-brokerage position.
Foreign pooled funds can add PFIC analysis even in a US brokerage. A US account alone does not establish the owner is a US tax resident; nonresident withholding rules differ.
Worth exploring: Compare the current portfolio with available retirement wrappers.
Ask a planner: Which securities and tax lots need a closer review?

International structures & other assets
International trust! Review / opportunity
Trust terms need a personal review
Settlor, trustee, beneficiary and distribution details determine the review. Adding a relative on the map does not make them a legal beneficiary.
An offshore trust is not an assumed tax shelter. Review its deed, owner and beneficiary tax connections, reporting and succession. No tax or savings calculation is produced.
Worth exploring: Review the existing trust before settling more assets.
Ask a planner: Who owns, controls or benefits from the trust?
Sources & conditions

International pension / QNUPS! Review / opportunity
Confirm recognition of the actual overseas scheme
A foreign pension label or QNUPS status does not establish destination recognition or treaty relief.
Review provider documents, funding, access, contributions and the intended payments. The tool does not calculate tax or suggest a transfer for this account.
Worth exploring: Compare the current arrangement with retaining existing home-country pensions.
Ask a planner: Which provisions recognise the exact scheme and payment?
Sources & conditions

Overseas holding company! Review / opportunity
Company ownership and activity need personal review
Tax residence, entity classification, control and operating activity cannot be inferred from the company jurisdiction.
Review company documents, accounts and where decisions and services occur. A shareholder relationship on this map is not a conclusion about management, tax residence or protection. No automatic savings are shown.
Worth exploring: Review the existing entity before adding a holding structure.
Ask a planner: What purpose does the company serve and where does it operate?

Other / overseas asset! Review / opportunity
This account is recorded for your meeting
Foreign contracts and assets outside the supported UK and US accounts stay visible without an automated assessment.
The account value and income can be included in your map totals. Classification, local recognition and any proposed change require its documents and an individual review. No automatic tax or savings are calculated.
Worth exploring: Discuss the current account before treating another wrapper as equivalent.
Ask a planner: Which documents explain the asset, owner and payment terms?
