Malta: test the programme against your pension
The Malta Retirement Programme deserves attention where pension income funds the household. Compare its eligibility requirements, minimum tax and remittance treatment with ordinary taxation. A 15% headline does not establish your effective rate.
Cyprus: check the current pension rules
Official guidance describes a separate 5% treatment above €5,000 for qualifying foreign pensions from 2026. Compare ordinary assessment and examine each pension category under the relevant treaty. Non-domicile status is a separate question.
Philippines: start with visa category and care
The Retirement Authority lists pension and annuity tax exemption among SRRV benefits. Confirm your category and continuing obligations elsewhere. Compare locations through specialist healthcare, insurance and emergency access as well as daily spending.

The pensioner residence route requires evidence of a qualifying lifetime pension and satisfaction of the other conditions. Confirm documentation before committing to a move. Then compare city, highland and coastal budgets.
Mauritius: connect residence to cash flow
Match the retired non-citizen permission to your circumstances. Confirm pension treatment and remittance rules directly, rather than assuming every foreign receipt receives the same exemption. Include flights and future medical needs in the budget.
Build a shortlist that can survive a change of plan
Compare healthcare, survivor income, community, currency and the ability to move again. Rent or trial a location where practical. Review pensions, investments and estate arrangements before departure, when there may still be more options.
Compare the retirement you want with the permission you need
Begin with the shape of ordinary life. How often will you travel, what medical care must be accessible and where does your family live? A lower day-to-day budget does not settle the cost of long-distance visits, insurance or a suitable home. Compare a single person, a couple and a family household using the same lifestyle assumptions. Then adjust each destination for the services you actually expect to use.
A retirement residence route may require a qualifying pension, income evidence, deposits or other conditions. A tax concession can be a separate application with its own obligations. Do not assume one approval grants the other, or that permanent residence and citizenship follow on the same timetable. Check the current official route and the country guide before committing to a property or financial transfer.
Match each pension to both countries
For British readers, a private pension, a government-service pension and the State Pension are different items to investigate. Payment form matters too: a regular withdrawal and a lump sum may need separate analysis. A destination's headline rate describes a possible local treatment, not a complete personal tax calculation.
For American readers, 401(k), traditional IRA, Roth and Social Security income should not be put into one pension bucket. The destination may classify the arrangements differently, while continuing US obligations remain relevant. An attractive local investment wrapper can introduce another US question. Ask for a country-by-country review of the accounts you hold rather than adopting someone else's retirement structure.
Keep a route back
Consider what changes if health, family or the visa position makes a return necessary. Keep enough flexibility to fund a move, understand provider access from another country and check the consequences of selling or withdrawing at short notice. A structure that suits permanent settlement may be less convenient for someone testing life abroad.
Use the comparison tool to build a shortlist, the lifestyle budget to test spending and the relocation checklist to organise the practical steps. The detailed country guides explain the sources and uncertainties. Bring the resulting questions to a wealth planner before making a large irreversible decision.
