Long-stay visitor, work and family routes
Choose the long-stay permission matching retirement, employment or independent activity, and keep EU or protected rights separate. A VLS-TS requiring validation and an instruction to apply for a residence card are different arrival procedures.
For overseas-employer telework, the June 2026 ministerial response addresses a conditional visitor-status assessment outside the French labour market. It is not a general digital-nomad visa or permission for all freelance and local work, and it does not settle tax or Social Security.

Public healthcare, top-up cover and housing
France has public healthcare. A sensible budget begins with the household's actual entitlement through work, stable legal residence or an applicable S1 route, rather than assuming an expensive international insurance policy is required indefinitely.
Then consider complementary insurance, unreimbursed spending and any contribution that applies to your circumstances. Housing, local charges, transport and regional differences should be priced separately. Premium spending can include faster private access or broader cover, but that is a choice rather than a description of every resident's basic needs.

Adjust the lifestyle budgetConfirm healthcare access before relying on it
Legal stable residence or work can provide access. Confirm waiting periods, S1, contributions and complementary cover. Public provision, insurance and out-of-pocket charges need separate checks. Obtain a quote for your age, medical history and required cover; the budget tool is an allowance rather than an insurance quotation.
Residence and citizenship are separate decisions
Language, residence, integration and other criteria apply. Shorter routes and exceptions exist. Check how your chosen permit counts towards any later application and what absences are allowed. Buying a property or paying an application fee is not an assurance that citizenship will follow.
Before leaving or returning to the UK
List the ISA, brokerage account, pensions and any onshore or offshore bond separately for the French review. Preserve policy and premium records before a surrender. The UK–France convention distinguishes pension categories, and the UK tax-free description of an account or payment does not establish its French treatment.
US connections continue to matter
France’s treaty provisions for recognised US pensions require an account-specific review. Keep traditional IRA, Roth and 401(k) records distinct. Assurance vie or another overseas investment contract also needs a US classification and PFIC assessment before purchase; French recognition alone is insufficient.

Make the conversation useful.
- Does my French residence permission cover the way I intend to work or support myself?
- What public entitlement, contributions and optional top-up cover should our French budget include?
- Which commitments should I delay until permission and healthcare are confirmed?
