Choose the emirate and the life you want
The UAE is a country, not a single housing market or administrative system. A role in Abu Dhabi, a family base in Dubai and retirement in another emirate can produce different practical plans. Start with the location of work, the journeys you will make, the school or medical services you need and how often you expect to travel abroad. These choices give the financial plan a purpose.
Build a short move brief before comparing products or companies: who is moving, what each person will do, which income pays for ordinary life and what would make you return. Keep a second version for an unexpected job change. A move can remain attractive while the preferred neighbourhood, housing arrangement or residence category changes. Deciding those priorities early makes later advice more specific and avoids buying a structure to solve a problem you do not actually have.

Residence categories and permission to work
Employer-sponsored residence, virtual work, qualifying retirement arrangements, Green Residence and Golden Residency serve different purposes. Check the authority responsible for the emirate and the actual activity. Dubai services can run through GDRFA, while ICP handles federal residence services. A residence approval, an Emirates ID and permission for a particular job or business are connected processes, not interchangeable documents.
Ask for a written list of the stages, the responsible party and the evidence required for your chosen category. An employee should establish what the employer handles and what happens to dependants when the role ends. An investor should check the conditions attached to the investment. Remote workers should describe the overseas employer and planned activity accurately rather than assume that any overseas salary makes a residence route suitable.

Separate the visa from your tax position
Organise your financial review around the source and nature of each receipt. Employment pay, personal investments, rental income and an activity operated as a business should not be placed in one undifferentiated income total. The FTA registration guidance distinguishes the business position of a natural person from excluded wage and personal investment activities. A company has its own analysis.
Keep a travel-day record, contracts, ownership details and evidence of where significant decisions are made. These records help the relevant advisers assess residence and any claim involving another country. An immigration approval is useful evidence about lawful stay, but it does not itself settle departure from a previous tax system. Plan a large disposal, bonus or pension payment before its date becomes fixed.
For a UK departure, establish residence and departure reporting before treating the UAE move as an end to UK taxation. Keep the dates of UK work, visits and retained income ready for the review.
A British household can model spending in GBP while earning or paying bills in another currency. Keep the conversion assumption visible and test a less favourable exchange rate rather than use the first year’s salary as a permanent spending ceiling.

Keep existing pensions and investments in the picture
Map each account before deciding whether to replace it. Record the legal owner, account type, approximate value, income paid, withdrawal restrictions and the provider’s policy for UAE residents. A pension that meets retirement needs may not need to move merely because its owner does. Check nominations, payment instructions and the administration needed to change address.
For UK pension treaty claims, HMRC identifies country-specific UAE evidence involving the relevant claim and an FTA Tax Residency Certificate. This is a paperwork and eligibility exercise, not an automatic switch on arrival. Different payments can require different analysis. Ask the planner to compare retaining the account with a proposed alternative after charges, source-country treatment, access and the possibility of another move.
An ISA’s UK treatment should not be confused with a universal international exemption. Include it alongside general investments and pensions in the asset map, and ask the provider about non-resident servicing and future contributions before departure.

A holding company can organise ownership, governance or succession, but it is not a universal requirement for someone moving to the UAE. Begin with the trading activity, customers, existing companies, directors and intended withdrawals. Ask which problem a new entity would solve and whether keeping the present ownership is a credible comparison.
For example, an owner with an established business abroad and a new UAE home should review decision-making, payroll and distributions together. Moving the shareholder does not answer every company-residence or reporting question. Request an estimate of ongoing professional administration, the work you must still do and the implications of closing or selling the structure. Compare the whole arrangement rather than only its formation fee or a headline company-tax description.

Housing and the costs that change your budget
Choose the household and lifestyle level in the budget tool, then replace the broad allowances with the costs of your actual plan. Housing, education, transport, healthcare, trips abroad and one-off move costs deserve separate lines. Distinguish benefits paid directly by an employer from an allowance that must cover several expenses. A salary figure without the package details can be misleading.
In Dubai, confirm the tenancy registration process through Ejari and the move-in arrangements for utilities. Do not assume the Dubai process applies identically in every emirate. Read the deposit, payment schedule, maintenance and exit conditions before paying. Set aside accessible money for the overlap between arrival and your first fully operational local account, without counting a refundable deposit as ordinary monthly consumption.
Consider a family whose offer includes an education allowance and employer-arranged medical cover. Before treating the whole allowance as disposable income, list the school’s actual invoices, transport, activities and any costs outside the package. Ask whether the medical benefit applies to all family members from arrival. Then run the same household budget without those employer-paid items, so you can see what retirement or a change of role would need to replace.
Keep the move reserve separate from long-term investments. A tenancy payment, school invoice and insurance renewal can fall in the same period even when the monthly average looks manageable. The amount to keep accessible should follow the payment schedule and the reliability of salary or pension receipts. This is a cash-flow decision rather than a prediction that investments will earn a particular return.
For someone retiring after years of UAE employment, the most useful comparison may be the present package against an independently funded household. Confirm residence and replacement cover before deciding how much pension income to request. A planner can then review the payment source and timing against a real spending gap, rather than start by recommending a new account.

Health insurance is a route and household decision
Confirm the insurance arrangements attached to your emirate, employment and residence category. Ask which family members are actually insured, where treatment is available, whether direct billing is offered and what happens when employment ends. A medical examination for residence is not a substitute for cover that pays treatment bills.
Get an individual quotation where you will fund cover yourself. Age, medical history, benefits, exclusions and the provider network can change the result substantially. For retirement, review what the policy would mean after a later diagnosis or at renewal, not only its first-year premium. In the lifestyle tool, an insurance allowance is a starting point for a household budget. It should be replaced with a suitable quotation before you commit to the move.

Arrival, banking, mobile identity and everyday access
Keep the entry, medical, residence and Emirates ID steps in a single checklist. Use the actual approval instructions and the relevant authority rather than a generic arrival deadline copied from another category. Retain a usable residential address and consistent contact details across applications. These practical records can matter when a bank asks you to complete its checks.
Ask the bank for its current account-opening documents, source-of-funds requirements and service restrictions. Confirm identity and registration requirements with the mobile operator, including the transition from a visitor line where relevant. UAE PASS can simplify access to supported services after the appropriate identity verification. Keep your accounts and login credentials under your own control, even when an employer or relocation firm helps with the process.

Family life, public expectations and travel
Each family member needs a practical plan for permission, schooling where relevant, medical care and access to money. Check dependent conditions and what changes when a child reaches a relevant age or a sponsor changes status. Keep relationship documents and the authority’s evidence list together, with enough time for any required certification.
Learn the public expectations of the places you will actually use. Official guidance asks residents and visitors to respect local dress expectations, with particular care in more conservative settings. Before a long absence, check the conditions of your own residence category rather than rely on a universal rule about time abroad. Build a family travel budget around necessary visits and school calendars, leaving discretionary trips separate so the plan can flex.

Make the family plan work if circumstances change
An international asset map should show ownership as well as account balances. List property, business shares, pensions and bank accounts, and identify the people who would need information or support if an owner died or lost capacity. Review beneficiary records and ask an appropriately qualified lawyer which wills, powers or local arrangements are relevant to the actual assets and family.
Do not assume a residence document, marriage or joint account resolves every succession issue. Ask how a surviving partner would pay immediate bills and manage records while formal processes take place. A useful first review can be modest: an accurate ownership list, emergency contacts, up-to-date nominations and clear instructions about where important documents are kept. Specialist legal work can then focus on identified gaps.

A practical sequence before and after the move
First confirm the residence route and work permissions. Next map the household budget and existing assets, including income and withdrawal plans. Ask providers about access and obtain the healthcare details. Only then fix transactions that are difficult to unwind, such as a new company, a pension transfer or a long housing commitment.
After arrival, complete the identity and address processes, verify banking access and keep the documents needed for any tax-residence evidence. Review the plan again when employment, family needs or the intended country of retirement changes. The tools can help you organise the questions; Pack Your Portfolio introduces eligible readers to qualified wealth planners for personal analysis. It does not replace individual financial, tax, immigration or legal advice.

THE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Planning your move to United Arab Emirates.
Does UAE residence automatically end UK tax residence?
No. Review the departure position and retained UK connections separately from the UAE permission to stay. Keep a dated record of work, travel and significant income events so an adviser can assess the actual facts. Ask about departure reporting before the first filing deadline becomes urgent.
Must I move my pension when I relocate?
A move alone is not a reason to transfer. Compare keeping the existing scheme with any alternative, including provider access, withholding paperwork, benefits, charges and a possible future return. Seek a personal review before giving up rights or triggering a withdrawal. Have the exact pension type and the UAE treaty-claim evidence ready.
Can the tools tell me which UAE company to establish?
They can help identify questions about ownership and income, but they cannot establish that a company is suitable. Your activity, other countries, management arrangements and ongoing obligations need individual assessment before a structure is created. Prepare the current business ownership and expected personal withdrawals.
Put your plans into perspective.
Build your own assumptions and prepare questions for a personal conversation.
