RETIREMENT ABROAD

Retiring in the UAE: pensions, residence and cash flow

Review pension withdrawals, source-country tax and the permission to remain after work.

United Arab Emirates: international living and wealth planning

Overseas pensions and retirement residence

A pension paid into the UAE needs two separate reviews: local treatment and the rights of the country from which the pension is paid. Private pensions, state benefits and government-service pensions may follow different rules. Receiving money in a UAE bank does not settle that analysis.

Retirement also changes the residence and healthcare arrangements previously supplied by an employer. Investigate the relevant retiree or other residence category before employment ends, and establish who will pay for medical cover. A long-term visa does not by itself justify transferring a pension.

Country facts to keep in view

Underlying country facts checked 2026-10-05. Headlines describe destination-side rules; personal eligibility and source-country tax need review.

A situation worth reviewing

A couple planning to stop work in Dubai might retain their existing pensions while changing the timing of withdrawals. Compare the source-country position, the household budget and future plans to return home before moving the investments into a new wrapper.

UK pension and account checks

For a UK departure, record residence, retained UK work and income, then confirm reporting before a major withdrawal or sale. For a UAE pension treaty claim, HMRC identifies country-specific evidence involving DT-Individual and an FTA Tax Residency Certificate. Check the exact pension type rather than infer relief from your visa.

Keep ISA, investment and pension provider access in the plan. An overseas address does not itself establish a tax result or make an account transfer suitable.

US pension and reporting checks

A US citizen or resident alien may retain worldwide-income obligations after moving to the UAE. Review the actual US status before relying on a local tax outcome. Foreign-company ownership, unfamiliar funds and international wrappers need a US classification and reporting check before purchase.

Ask whether your existing custodian can service a UAE address. Keep account access, investment choice and tax reporting separate in the comparison.

Build the retirement budget first

Separate regular pension payments from withdrawals of savings and sales of investments. Allow for healthcare, currency changes, travel and a surviving partner’s needs. Use the lifestyle budget as an editable starting point, then obtain actual housing and insurance quotes. A change of pension wrapper should have a documented benefit after costs, with access and future residence considered.

UK ISA! Review / opportunity

A new wrapper is not automatically needed

Personal investment income is excluded from the UAE natural-person business tax scope.

Verify UK departure, investment versus business activity and provider access. ISA contribution limits abroad still apply. The FTA distinguishes personal investment income from business activity. Personal treatment cannot be copied into a company calculation.

Worth exploring: Compare retaining personal investments before adding a pension, bond or company.

Ask a planner: Can the ISA be kept, and how are its underlying returns treated locally?

UK pension / SIPP! Review / opportunity

Review a qualifying private pension claim

Qualifying private pensions may benefit from the UK-UAE pension article. Government-service payments and residence evidence differ.

Government-service pensions differ from qualifying private pensions. HMRC requests a completed DT-Individual form and a UAE FTA Tax Residency Certificate. Confirm pension category and treaty residence before assuming UK PAYE will stop.

Worth exploring: Check the existing pension claim before paying for an overseas replacement.

Ask a planner: Does the scheme and residence evidence support the intended relief?

General investment account! Review / opportunity

Personal holdings can be simpler than a company

A UAE holding company is not automatically more efficient than personal investments.

The FTA distinguishes personal investment receipts from business activity. A company has separate corporate obligations. Check UK departure, source tax and provider access before changing ownership.

Worth exploring: Compare retaining personal investments before adding a pension, bond or company.

Ask a planner: Are these investments held personally or as a business?

UK onshore bond! Review / opportunity

Review the onshore policy before withdrawals

Assess the local classification of your onshore or offshore investment bond. A UK withdrawal calculation does not determine the destination’s treatment.

UAE treatment can be favourable for personal investments, but policy costs and UK temporary non-residence rules still matter. A new wrapper is not automatically an improvement. Check the specific insurer, payment type and any planned UK return. The FTA distinguishes personal investment income from business activity. Personal treatment cannot be copied into a company calculation.

Worth exploring: Compare retaining personal investments before adding a pension, bond or company.

Ask a planner: What is capital, what is a policy gain and which country can tax the payment?

US accounts

401(k)! Review / opportunity

Assess the existing 401(k) distribution plan

The UAE personal-tax position does not remove US tax on traditional IRA or 401(k) distributions.

There is no comprehensive US-UAE income tax treaty listed by the IRS. Citizenship, residence and US withholding status matter.

Worth exploring: Compare retaining the existing retirement account and coordinating withdrawals before considering a transfer.

Ask a planner: How would each 401(k) distribution be treated in both countries?

Will the Roth treatment travel with you?

A qualified Roth distribution keeps its US treatment; it does not create a UAE deduction or a reason to transfer abroad.

Confirm US qualification, account access and the actual local classification before changing the arrangement. The FTA distinguishes personal investment income from business activity. Personal treatment cannot be copied into a company calculation.

Worth exploring: Review the existing Roth before making transfers, conversions or replacement arrangements.

US brokerage account! Review / opportunity

Compare a simple portfolio with added structure

UAE personal investment income can fall outside corporate tax while US investors continue to face US tax.

A US brokerage account does not change the rules for the person holding it or make non-US funds safe for US taxpayers. US taxpayers should check non-US funds for PFIC requirements before changing investments. The FTA distinguishes personal investment income from business activity. Personal treatment cannot be copied into a company calculation.

Worth exploring: Compare a straightforward US-compatible portfolio with the costs of added wrappers.

Ask a planner: Would a simpler portfolio meet both countries’ requirements?

International trust! High priority

A trust needs a personal review

The deed, settlor, trustees and beneficiaries determine the questions to investigate.

Review local attribution, distributions, source and succession. A US person may have foreign-trust reporting and tax obligations. This tool assigns no trust tax rate or saving.

Worth exploring: Compare the existing trust with simpler ownership only after reviewing the deed.

International pension / QNUPS! Review / opportunity

Recognise the pension before modelling a benefit

An international pension or QNUPS needs scheme-specific review.

Check the exact scheme, source and treaty entitlement before moving money. The personal-investment position may already be favourable without an overseas pension. For US persons, foreign-plan recognition and reporting need separate checks. No numerical saving is assigned.

Worth exploring: Retaining existing accounts remains a valid comparison where another structure adds costs.

Ask a planner: What legal recognition and treaty treatment apply to the scheme and payments?

Other / overseas asset! Review / opportunity

Bring this asset into the planner discussion

Other overseas accounts are recorded without an automated tax assessment.

The tool has not researched this specific contract. Its legal jurisdiction, owner, rights and payment records need individual review, including any continuing US obligations.

Worth exploring: Use the map to prepare a focused review rather than infer treatment from another account.

Ask a planner: What documents establish the asset’s legal form and the owner’s rights?
