Begin with the place and purpose of your move
Retirement, employment, a business and overseas remote work create different relocation plans in the Philippines. Start with the actual activity and intended location, then test whether the residence route and household budget support it. A city base near specialist services, a family home near a school and a quieter coastal routine need different allowances and practical arrangements.
Keep commitments abroad in the first-year plan, including any retained home, family support and necessary travel. Make room for the costs of changing course if the first location is not suitable. This is especially useful before making a property commitment or replacing an investment account. A clear move brief helps a planner identify relevant questions without asking you to construct a detailed tax model yourself.

Choose an actual residence and work route
Employer-sponsored 9(g) permission, the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa and a qualifying investor arrangement address different circumstances. Check the responsible agency, the applicant’s current admission status and whether an in-country conversion is available. The production eVisa policy warns that its eVisas are not convertible or extendable, so do not assume every form of visitor admission works for a later residence application.
For employment, coordinate the employer petition and the relevant labour authorization before work begins. A residence card and permission to perform a particular activity should not be treated as the same document. Business ownership also raises licensing and operating questions beyond permission to stay. Ask the agency to identify the correct sequence before paying a third party or booking around an assumed approval date.

SRRV retirement planning and the real obligations
The PRA’s current SRRV material sets out age, category, deposit, pension and documentary conditions. Assess the actual option and eligible family members rather than use an old program summary. Follow accredited-bank instructions for any required deposit and retain the inward-remittance evidence. The deposit, processing charges and continuing program costs are different items.
SRRV holders have specific exemptions from BI annual reporting, the ACR identity card and BI exit/re-entry permits. These do not remove PRA card, deposit or applicable annual obligations. PRA also provides assistance with an Alien Employment Permit for gainful employment, so retirement residence should not be treated as a blanket exemption from work-authorization checks. Review the practical position before starting a local role.

Treat Digital Nomad Visa availability as a live check
Executive Order 86 authorises a Digital Nomad Visa for qualifying overseas remote work, with conditions including nationality reciprocity, overseas clients or an employer and health insurance. Legal authorization of a category is not the same as a confirmed application channel for your passport. At review, the production eVisa policy did not publish an operational DNV category.
Obtain current written instructions from the responsible Philippine consular post before relying on DNV for the move. Ask about availability, the accepted nationality, documents, fees and permitted activity. Do not substitute a staging portal or an overseas-income assumption for approval. If another permission is being considered, have the actual activity assessed under that permission rather than assume it inherits DNV rights or tax treatment.

For a foreign national, the source of income is a central part of the Philippine tax review. The National Internal Revenue Code distinguishes citizenship, residence and income source. Services performed in the Philippines require attention even where the client and paying bank are abroad. Someone who is also a Philippine citizen may have a different scope from a foreign retiree.
Identify each receipt: private pension, government-service payment, dividend, sale proceeds, rental income or consulting fee. Keep the documents explaining the underlying activity and asset. A UK account label does not establish a Philippine tax charge, and an overseas bank does not automatically make every receipt foreign-source. Review the position before adding a structure that is presented as solving a tax problem the existing assets may not actually have.

Existing pensions and QNUPS deserve a fair comparison
Map the existing pension and investment accounts first, including ownership, approximate values, regular income, access conditions and intended use. A QNUPS is a qualifying non-UK pension concept under UK rules, not a universal Philippine exemption. Its UK description does not prove local pension recognition or establish that it improves on keeping existing accounts.
For example, a retiree with an ISA and a UK pension should not automatically be told that the ISA becomes locally taxable and therefore must be moved. Establish the actual source and classification, the paying country’s rights and the provider’s service policy. Compare a proposed international pension after costs, access restrictions and the possibility of another move. A documented succession or retirement-design benefit should be distinguished from an unverified tax-saving claim.
A useful first comparison can leave every account where it is. Show the expected pension income, the withdrawals needed from ordinary investments and the provider access required to pay for life locally. Then add any proposed structure as a second scenario, with its charges and restrictions visible. If the existing foreign-source position already meets the need, the new arrangement must justify itself through a real additional benefit rather than an assumed tax charge.
For SRRV planning, keep the program deposit and retirement spending distinguishable. Confirm the bank instructions and the evidence required for the chosen option, then identify the separate cash available for rent, treatment and everyday costs. Do not count money committed to program conditions as automatically available for every household expense. Any permitted use of the deposit requires the actual PRA rules, not a general assumption about investment access.
A returning Philippine citizen or someone with dual nationality should make that status clear at the start. The foreign-national source analysis in an example may not describe the person’s own position. Likewise, a US tax connection can change the value of a structure that looks attractive under local rules alone. These are reasons for a personal assessment, not details that a simple website questionnaire should quietly guess.
Keep the comparison understandable: the current accounts, the identified issue and the proposed change. An eligible reader can share that map with a planner together with the questions that remain open. The planner can then assess tax, retirement and family objectives with the relevant professionals before recommending an action.

Check the paying country and personal tax status
Local treatment, source-country withholding and a continuing personal tax obligation can coexist. A private pension, state benefit, government-service payment and investment withdrawal should not be combined into one retirement-income answer. Review any relevant treaty for the actual receipt and residence facts before instructing a provider to change a payment.
Keep the departure-year records and the timing of planned sales, withdrawals and business distributions. Ask the advisor to identify the claim, evidence and ongoing filings where relevant. The country in which money is received does not settle all of these questions. Nor does selecting the UK or US edition identify someone’s citizenship or tax status; disclose dual nationality and other continuing connections in a personal review.
US citizens and resident aliens generally retain worldwide-income obligations abroad. A Philippine local exemption does not establish exemption in the US.
Bring each IRA, Roth, 401(k) and brokerage account to the review. Foreign funds can raise PFIC issues, and international pensions or trusts need their own US classification before a transfer is considered.

Use a local household budget, not a holiday total
Choose a household size and spending level in the lifestyle budget, then replace allowances with the services and location you intend to use. Housing, transport, education, healthcare, trips abroad and continuing overseas commitments belong on separate lines. A holiday budget can miss the costs of an established year-round household.
Before making a longer accommodations commitment, confirm the lease, deposit, utilities and the address evidence available. Consider medical access and the practical journeys you will make, not only the rent. Use PAGASA information when reviewing local severe-weather preparations and ask a building or host about its arrangements. Keep one-off moving costs separate from recurring spending and retain accessible money for the period before local banking is fully operational.

Confirm PhilHealth eligibility and actual treatment cover
PhilHealth has a published framework for foreign nationals and former Filipino retirees. Check your own enrolment category and benefits rather than assume a foreign retiree receives every citizen or senior benefit. If employed, establish the relevant employer arrangements and how your household will access treatment. DNV’s stated health-insurance condition should be considered separately from an unconfirmed application procedure.
Identify the hospitals, regular medicines and specialist care you may need, then review the cover you actually have. Obtain a suitable quotation for any private insurance gap, including existing conditions, exclusions, renewal and the provider network. Keep premiums and personally funded treatment separate in the budget. Neither a visa medical certificate nor a broad national healthcare description tells you what a particular treatment will cost your family.

Arrival records, bank access, SIMs and travel
Use the official free eTravel service for the applicable journey, and keep the confirmation separate from residence approval. Follow the selected route’s identity and appointment process. For example, a 9(g) procedure can involve BI hearing and ACR formalities, while SRRV has its own PRA framework and exemptions.
Ask the chosen bank for the identity, residence, address and source-of-funds evidence required for the actual account. A published accepted-ID list does not guarantee approval. Register the mobile line under the correct status: tourist registration has temporary validity, while other visa categories use different continuing-use evidence. Before an overseas trip, check any departure clearance required for your visa and circumstances. Do not apply ordinary ACR-holder exit rules automatically to SRRV.

Family protection and a practical decision sequence
Confirm the permission and work position of every accompanying family member. Keep relationship documents and the authority’s accepted evidence list together. For family protection, identify the owners of property, business shares, pensions and accounts held in different countries. Review nominations and ask qualified legal professionals about wills, incapacity and guardianship arrangements relevant to those assets.
Confirm the residence route before making difficult-to-reverse commitments. Next settle the household budget, treatment access, provider servicing and the tax-sensitive dates. After arrival, complete the relevant records and check the ongoing program obligations. Pack Your Portfolio introduces eligible readers to qualified wealth planners for personal review. Its guides and tools prepare the questions, while individual financial, tax, immigration and legal conclusions require the appropriate professional assessment.

THE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Planning your move to Philippines.
Is a foreign pension automatically tax-free in every case?
No blanket answer is appropriate. Identify the payment, the person’s citizenship and residence, the income source and any paying-country or treaty position. A local exemption does not remove a separate US obligation or automatically change withholding. Include the actual US retirement-account documents.
Must an SRRV holder complete the ordinary BI annual report?
PRA lists SRRV exemption from BI annual reporting, the ACR identity card and BI exit/re-entry permits. PRA card, deposit and applicable program obligations still need to be maintained. Check the household’s actual status before a trip.
Can I plan around the Digital Nomad Visa now?
Confirm an operating application channel and nationality eligibility with the responsible consular post first. EO 86 authorises the category, but the production portal reviewed did not establish an operational DNV procedure for your passport. Overseas clients alone are not proof of permission.
