Moving to the UAE: residence, healthcare and living costs

Choose the emirate, residence route and household budget before making financial commitments.

United Arab Emirates: international living and wealth planning

Work, Golden Visa and retirement routes

Employment-sponsored residence, qualifying Golden Visa categories and retiree routes have different purposes. Choose the route that reflects how you will live and work, then check the required evidence through the relevant authority. Family sponsorship and the permission to run a business need their own checks.

Confirm what happens when a job ends, an investment is sold or a dependent child becomes an adult. Keep visa duration, permitted absences and tax residence as separate entries in your move plan.

Housing, school fees and medical cover

Price the emirate and neighborhood you would actually choose. Rent, deposits, local housing charges, utilities and transport can change the result much more than a low personal-tax headline. School fees and trips home can be major family commitments.

Separate benefits an employer pays directly from allowances and bills you fund yourself. Check medical cover for every family member, including retirement and a change of job. The lifestyle tool is an editable allowance; replace housing and insurance assumptions with quotations before committing.

Adjust the lifestyle budget

Confirm healthcare access before relying on it

Employer or personal cover; check emirate and visa requirements. Public provision, insurance and out-of-pocket charges need separate checks. Obtain a quote for your age, medical history and required cover; the budget tool is an allowance rather than an insurance quotation.

Residence and citizenship are separate decisions

Residence does not create an automatic citizenship route. Check how your chosen permit counts towards any later application and what absences are allowed. Buying a property or paying an application fee is not an assurance that citizenship will follow.

Before leaving or returning to the UK

For a UK departure, record residence, retained UK work and income, then confirm reporting before a major withdrawal or sale. For a UAE pension treaty claim, HMRC identifies country-specific evidence involving DT-Individual and an FTA Tax Residency Certificate. Check the exact pension type rather than infer relief from your visa.

Keep ISA, investment and pension provider access in the plan. An overseas address does not itself establish a tax result or make an account transfer suitable.

US connections continue to matter

A US citizen or resident alien may retain worldwide-income obligations after moving to the UAE. Review the actual US status before relying on a local tax outcome. Foreign-company ownership, unfamiliar funds and international wrappers need a US classification and reporting check before purchase.

Ask whether your existing custodian can service a UAE address. Keep account access, investment choice and tax reporting separate in the comparison.

BRING THESE QUESTIONS

Make the conversation useful.

  • Which UAE residence route fits my plans after employment ends or my circumstances change?
  • What will my household fund itself after employer benefits are taken into account?
  • Which commitments should I delay until permission and healthcare are confirmed?
