Moving or Returning to the US: Residence and Living Costs

Understand the permission to stay and the household commitments behind a move to United States.

United States: international living and wealth planning

Work, family and permanent residence

US immigration permission depends on the relevant work, family or other category. A temporary visa, a green card and citizenship are different statuses, with different rights and continuing obligations. Obtain immigration advice for the actual household and planned activity.

Separately establish when US tax residence begins, including the effect of presence and green-card status. Review foreign assets before that date. An immigration application or a property purchase should not be assumed to determine all tax reporting.

Country facts to keep in view

Residence routes
Family / employment / investor routesGreen-card categories and temporary visas have separate requirements; purchasing a home alone is not a residence route.
Citizenship
Usually 5 years as a permanent residentResidence, physical presence, language, civics and character requirements apply; some spouse routes use three years.
Healthcare
Employer / private / eligible public coverLawfully present immigrants may qualify for Marketplace coverage; Medicare and Medicaid have their own eligibility rules.
Property ownership
Mortgage and local-tax checksCompare financing, closing costs, insurance and ongoing property costs. Obtain local advice on any foreign-buyer restrictions.

Healthcare premiums, location and state costs

Healthcare deserves a distinct line in a US budget. Compare employer contributions, premiums, deductibles, networks and maximum out-of-pocket costs for the whole family. Public programs have eligibility conditions; overseas retirement does not automatically establish access.

Housing and transport vary substantially between states and cities. Include property-related costs, school choice and the need for a car as applicable. Keep federal and state tax planning separate from ordinary spending, and allow for medical costs that an insurance premium alone does not cover.

Adjust the lifestyle budget

Confirm healthcare access before relying on it

Lawfully present immigrants may qualify for Marketplace coverage; Medicare and Medicaid have their own eligibility rules. Public provision, insurance and out-of-pocket charges need separate checks. Obtain a quote for your age, medical history and required cover; the budget tool is an allowance rather than an insurance quotation.

Residence and citizenship are separate decisions

A US citizen can return on the basis of citizenship, while a non-citizen partner needs an appropriate status. A permanent resident returning after a long absence should check the immigration implications before travel. For a new arrival, a temporary visa, permanent residence and later naturalization are separate stages. A property purchase is not a general route to a right to settle.

Before leaving or returning to the UK

Review UK ISAs, funds and life policies before US residence begins. A British account name does not determine its US classification. Coordinate the UK departure-year analysis with US federal residence and the chosen state. The UK-US treaty has specific pension provisions, but it should not be treated as a universal exemption for British assets or as a substitute for state analysis.

US connections continue to matter

A returning American generally remained subject to federal worldwide-income reporting while abroad. Focus on the change in state residence, continued reporting for overseas accounts and practical access to retained foreign pensions. Medicare eligibility and enrolment also need checking; returning citizenship alone is not an assurance of immediate free healthcare.

BRING THESE QUESTIONS

Make the conversation useful.

  • When would our immigration and US tax statuses begin, and what needs reviewing beforehand?
  • What is the full household cost after state location, employer benefits and medical out-of-pocket exposure?
  • Which commitments should I delay until permission and healthcare are confirmed?
