Choose a base that supports everyday life
A Mauritius move can be a retirement decision, a professional role, a business venture or an overseas-funded stay. Start with the location and routine rather than a photograph or a countrywide spending average. Identify the work journeys, medical services, education and travel commitments the household will actually use. Compare possible homes on those needs before fixing a budget.
Keep an initial version of the plan flexible. Renting first, retaining an accessible reserve and delaying an unfamiliar financial structure can give you time to understand the practical fit. Include commitments still payable abroad and the cost of changing plans. The purpose is not to predict every expense. It is to avoid basing residence, retirement withdrawals and housing decisions on assumptions that cannot comfortably work together.

Occupation Permits and the intended work
Mauritius has distinct occupation categories for qualifying professional employment, investment and self-employed activity. Check the exact current category, applicant evidence and business or employer conditions through the official process. Approval in principle, local evidence, original-document checks and the final permit are stages of the process, not interchangeable approvals.
Use the activity you actually intend to carry out when selecting the category. A company’s existence does not by itself grant its owner permission to work, and a residence document does not replace licensing for a regulated service. Record the responsibilities of the employer or business, the evidence you must maintain and what changes if the activity or employer changes. Check each family member’s permission separately rather than assume the main approval covers the whole household.

Tax residence and foreign-income remittances
MRA’s foreign-income guidance includes pensions, annuities, employment receipts, business income and investment income within its definition. For residents, it describes the relevance of Mauritius-source income and foreign income remitted to Mauritius. Establish residence and classify the underlying receipt before selecting a tax answer. A retirement permit is not a blanket personal foreign-income exemption.
Keep statements distinguishing pension payments, investment income, original savings and disposal proceeds. Record the transfers that will fund life locally and any overseas tax already paid. Ask how a planned payment is treated before establishing an automatic transfer schedule. A bank account outside Mauritius does not settle the nature of money later brought in, and a company-level tax description should not be substituted for the individual’s actual assessment.

EXPERT INTERNATIONAL WEALTH PLANNING
Make your Mauritius plans personal.
Speak with an International Wealth Planner about your pensions, investments and financial structure before moving to Mauritius, or review the arrangements you already have abroad.
£1m+ investable wealth or £35k+ monthly income.
Tell us your plans. Check your fit. Request a consultation.Existing pensions need a payment plan, not an automatic transfer
Identify private pensions, state benefits, government-service pensions and ordinary investments separately. The paying country and any applicable treaty can affect the review as well as Mauritius treatment. Keep the scheme documents, withdrawal conditions and beneficiary details ready. Confirm that the provider can service a Mauritius address and make the payments you intend to use.
For example, a couple funding living costs from a regular pension and occasional investment sales should distinguish those receipts in the cash-flow plan. Compare the existing arrangements with a proposed international pension after fees, access and future residence. The useful question is which documented problem the change solves. Do not assume a new pension wrapper creates an exemption or that a pension should become income of a Global Business Company.
For a practical comparison, begin with the annual amount the household expects to use locally and identify how each part will be funded. A pension payment, a withdrawal of original savings and a sale of investments should remain separate in the record. Ask which evidence establishes the character of each receipt and how the proposed transfer schedule interacts with the permit conditions. The account sending the money is only one part of that history.
Include a second scenario in which the couple returns abroad or one partner needs more frequent treatment. The appropriate reserve, currency exposure and withdrawal pattern may change even if the assets themselves are unchanged. This can be a more valuable planning exercise than moving the whole portfolio into a new wrapper. A suitable structure should continue to make sense when normal family circumstances change.
Before a substantial pension or investment decision, request a plain explanation of the proposed benefit, the continuing cost and the rights or flexibility being given up. Keep the treatment under each relevant country separate. Company relief, a personal treaty claim and permission to remain are different questions; satisfying one does not supply the answer to the others.
An adviser can use these records to assess a specific payment plan rather than start with an assumed tax rate for all retirement income. That leaves the website useful as preparation while reserving the detailed recommendation for the personal review.

UK and US connections need their own review
The country edition is a reading preference rather than a tax-status declaration. A household may include several citizenships, accounts in different countries and income connected with previous employment. Disclose those facts when requesting advice. Review departure reporting, retained income and the dates of major financial events separately from the Mauritius permit application.
Ask for the relevant treaty or domestic-law basis for each conclusion. A private pension, government payment and company distribution may not receive the same answer. Keep the records and any residence evidence used for a claim. Revisit the analysis if work, the intended length of stay or the next destination changes, rather than treating the first assessment as a permanent result.
Confirm UK departure reporting and identify the exact pension payment before relying on the UK Mauritius convention. Review the local remittance position and any applicable limitation or claim conditions alongside the paying-country treatment.
Use GBP for the long-term household plan if that reflects your financial goals, while showing the currency exposure of pensions and local bills.

Separate personal retirement from global business
A Global Business Company is a regulated business topic, not a substitute for an individual’s residence permit or a universal personal wealth account. An appropriate review considers the actual international activity, governance, licensing, ownership and income. A company proposal should identify the problem it addresses rather than begin with an assumed effective tax rate.
Compare keeping the existing business with the proposed structure after professional administration, personal distributions and obligations in other countries. Ask who performs management, what evidence of activity must be maintained and how the arrangement would be closed or sold. US-connected owners also need their own entity-classification and reporting review. For a straightforward retirement portfolio, a company may add work and cost without providing an identified benefit.

Housing and costs that deserve separate lines
Use the lifestyle budget to compare household sizes and spending levels, then price the actual home, transport, education and services you intend to use. Include trips abroad and continuing commitments elsewhere. Keep deposits, moving costs and any residence-route investment or transfer evidence separate from ordinary monthly consumption so the same money is not counted twice.
Read the lease, utilities, maintenance and exit conditions before paying. If buying, obtain advice on the applicable non-citizen acquisition permission or authorised scheme rather than assume a property purchase is unrestricted or provides residence. Check the location against everyday journeys and treatment access. Retain a practical reserve for the period before local banking and provider administration are fully operational.

Check treatment access and category-specific cover
Premium Visa guidance requires appropriate health and travel insurance. That condition should not be applied as an identical universal private-insurance rule for every person in Mauritius. Occupation and retirement applications also have medical evidence requirements, which are different from a policy paying treatment bills. Confirm the actual category and the household’s treatment access.
Identify a provider for regular medicines and any ongoing specialist care, then check entitlement, charges and employer benefits where relevant. If purchasing private cover, obtain a quotation based on age, medical history, exclusions, renewal and the network you will use. Keep the premium distinct from uncovered treatment and routine costs. A national healthcare description or a generic budget allowance cannot determine the right policy or full cost for an individual household.

Banking, identity, mobile service and local records
Follow the official arrival and permit instructions, including any relevant travel form, appointments and original-document checks. Keep the actual residential address consistent across records. Ask the chosen bank which identity, address, residence and source-of-funds documents are required for the account you need; published product information is not guaranteed acceptance.
For mobile access, use current operator onboarding instructions. ICTA repealed the 2023 SIM-registration regulations in December 2024, so an old re-registration or photo process should not be repeated as a current universal requirement. Mauritius Telecom publishes separate documents for citizens, resident non-citizens and tourists. Keep the line in your own name and check the process if your status changes. For tax administration, confirm applicable filing and online identity access rather than assume every new arrival needs a new tax registration.

Family protection, weather and the order of decisions
Check each dependant’s residence and work position and keep relationship evidence ready. Map the owners of pensions, property, accounts and business interests across countries. Review nominations and ask qualified legal professionals about wills, incapacity and guardianship arrangements for the actual family and assets. Make sure someone can meet immediate household bills if the main account holder is unavailable.
Use official cyclone and torrential-rain warnings when planning arrival and ask a host or building about local preparations. Confirm the permit first, then the household budget, healthcare, provider access and tax-sensitive payments. After arrival, complete the required records and review the plan when work or residence intentions change. THE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Planning your move to Mauritius.
Is an overseas pension automatically tax-free in Mauritius?
No. MRA includes pensions in its foreign-income guidance and the resident remittance position needs review. Identify the payment and any paying-country or treaty conditions before arranging withdrawals or transfers. Keep private and government-service pensions distinguishable.
Can a Premium Visa holder take a local job?
The published Premium Visa conditions exclude entry into the Mauritius labour market. Review the actual activity and a suitable occupation or other permission before taking up local employment. Do not assume an overseas employer makes every activity permitted.
Does a Global Business Company solve personal retirement tax?
Not automatically. Company licensing, activity and taxation are separate from an individual’s residence and pension treatment. Compare an actual proposal with retaining existing accounts and identify a documented benefit after costs and other-country obligations. The retirement permit does not transform pension income into company profits.
