Retiring in Mauritius: foreign pensions and remittance planning

Review overseas pension receipts and residence eligibility without assuming a blanket exemption.

Foreign pensions and remittance treatment

Mauritius treats foreign income, including pensions, under rules that require attention to residence and remittance. A pension paid from abroad should not simply be described as tax-free. Establish which income is being received and how the applicable treaty interacts with local assessment.

The retired non-citizen residence route has financial evidence and continuing conditions. It does not convert a personal pension into income of a Global Business Company or establish special company relief for retirement spending.

Country facts to keep in view

Underlying country facts checked 2026-10-06. Headlines describe destination-side rules; personal eligibility and source-country tax need review.

A situation worth reviewing

A couple funding retirement from pension payments and investment capital should distinguish the two in their records. The amount moved into a local account and the nature of the receipt can matter, so request an income-by-income review before setting the payment schedule.

UK pension and account checks

Review the exact pension type under the UK Mauritius convention alongside local residence and remittance treatment. Departure reporting, source-country withholding and any claim or relief limitation need to be considered together.

Keep pension payments, investment income and original savings distinguishable. Confirm provider access and review a large payment before fixing its date; a residence permit alone does not settle the result.

US pension and reporting checks

Mauritius is not on the IRS comprehensive income-tax treaty list reviewed for this article. A UK treaty pension result should not be applied to a US account, and local treatment does not establish exemption for a US citizen or resident alien.

Review retirement accounts, foreign funds and company ownership with a US specialist. PFIC or foreign-entity classification and reporting can remain relevant even where a local proposal is described as tax-efficient.

Build the retirement budget first

Separate regular pension payments from withdrawals of savings and sales of investments. Allow for healthcare, currency changes, travel and a surviving partner’s needs. Use the lifestyle budget as an editable starting point, then obtain actual housing and insurance quotes. A change of pension wrapper should have a documented benefit after costs, with access and future residence considered.

ISA relief does not define remitted income

Mauritius distinguishes remitted foreign income from qualifying securities gains.

An ISA wrapper does not establish classification. Identify dividends, interest, gains and capital before designing remittances. Distinguish remitted foreign income from capital and qualifying securities gains. A retirement permit is not proof of a universal pension exemption.

Worth exploring: Compare a documented income and capital plan with the costs of adding another structure.

Ask a planner: Can the ISA be kept, and how are its underlying returns treated locally?

Check pension recognition and treaty conditions

Foreign pension income can be taxable when remitted under MRA’s resident framework. Any permit-specific exemption must be established separately.

Article 18 covers qualifying private pensions and annuities; government-service benefits have separate treatment under Article 19. MRA foreign-income guidance includes pensions and resident remittances. Any pension lump-sum or permit-specific relief needs its own conditions.

Worth exploring: Coordinate the existing scheme, treaty claim and remittance plan before transferring.

Ask a planner: How are regular income, any lump sum and government benefits classified?

Separate securities gains from portfolio income

Securities-gain relief does not make every dividend or interest payment exempt.

Record remitted foreign income separately from original capital and exempt gains. The relief must fit the actual asset and transaction rather than the UK account label.

Worth exploring: Keeping a well-documented GIA may be simpler than adding a wrapper.

Ask a planner: Can each transfer be traced to income, a qualifying gain or original capital?

UK onshore bond! Review / opportunity

Review the onshore policy before withdrawals

Assess the local classification of your onshore or offshore investment bond. A UK withdrawal calculation does not determine the destination’s treatment.

Insurance proceeds are not automatically the same as exempt gains on securities. Confirm classification and remittances before changing or surrendering the policy. Check the specific insurer, payment type and any planned UK return. Distinguish remitted foreign income from capital and qualifying securities gains. A retirement permit is not proof of a universal pension exemption.

Worth exploring: Compare a documented income and capital plan with the costs of adding another structure.

Ask a planner: What is capital, what is a policy gain and which country can tax the payment?

Will the Roth treatment travel with you?

A US qualified Roth exemption does not by itself establish a Mauritian exemption for remitted foreign income.

Review the actual payment, any return of capital and local classification. No comprehensive US treaty supplies an assumed exemption. Distinguish remitted foreign income from capital and qualifying securities gains. A retirement permit is not proof of a universal pension exemption.

Local securities relief does not remove US tax

Mauritian securities-gain exemptions and taxation of remitted foreign income need separate assessment alongside US rules.

Identify dividends, interest and realised gains before selecting a remittance strategy. US taxpayers should check non-US funds for PFIC requirements before changing investments. Distinguish remitted foreign income from capital and qualifying securities gains. A retirement permit is not proof of a universal pension exemption.

Worth exploring: Compare a straightforward US-compatible portfolio with the costs of added wrappers.

International pension / QNUPS! Review / opportunity

Recognise the pension before modelling a benefit

An international pension or QNUPS needs scheme-specific review.

Remitted foreign pension income needs classification and any specific relief must be proved. QNUPS status alone does not establish a Mauritius exemption. For US persons, foreign-plan recognition and reporting need separate checks. No numerical saving is assigned.

Worth exploring: Retaining existing accounts remains a valid comparison where another structure adds costs.
