Retired, occupation and property routes
Mauritius offers different permissions for retired non-citizens, occupational activity and certain property investments. Match the route to what you intend to do and confirm the current income, investment and documentation requirements.
Check the position of family members, work rights and any conditions tied to holding an investment or property. Tax residence and foreign-income treatment remain separate. A professional or company licence should not be confused with the holder's personal residence permission.
Country facts to keep in view
- Residence routes
- Retired 50+ / occupation / investor permitsThe retirement route requires evidenced financial resources and transfers; renewal and permanent-residence conditions apply.
- Citizenship
- Residence-based; nationality affects the routeCommonwealth registration can use five years. Other naturalisation and investor categories have separate requirements.
- Healthcare
- Arrange medical cover; check local accessNo UK reciprocal health agreement. Confirm entitlement and private treatment costs for your circumstances.
- Property ownership
- Foreign buyers: approved schemes / permissionQualifying developments include IRS, RES, PDS and Smart City; investment residence has separate conditions.
Healthcare, transport and island costs
A Mauritius budget should include the specific coastal or inland location, transport and the distance to the services the household uses. Imported goods, international schooling and long-haul travel can make an expatriate budget different from an ordinary local household average.
Confirm healthcare entitlement and obtain private-cover quotations where appropriate. Keep any minimum residence-route transfer or investment commitment separate from money actually spent each month. Consider currency movements between the source of pension income and local spending.

Adjust the lifestyle budgetConfirm healthcare access before relying on it
Confirm treatment entitlement, charges and any employer benefits for your household. Premium Visa has specific health and travel insurance conditions; permit medical evidence is a different requirement and is not itself treatment cover.
Obtain an individual private-cover quotation where appropriate and keep premiums separate from personally funded treatment. The lifestyle tool provides an editable allowance rather than an insurance recommendation.
Residence and citizenship are separate decisions
Commonwealth registration can use five years. Other naturalisation and investor categories have separate requirements. Check how your chosen permit counts towards any later application and what absences are allowed. Buying a property or paying an application fee is not an assurance that citizenship will follow.
Before leaving or returning to the UK
Review the exact pension type under the UK Mauritius convention alongside local residence and remittance treatment. Departure reporting, source-country withholding and any claim or relief limitation need to be considered together.
Keep pension payments, investment income and original savings distinguishable. Confirm provider access and review a large payment before fixing its date; a residence permit alone does not settle the result.
US connections continue to matter
Mauritius is not on the IRS comprehensive income-tax treaty list reviewed for this article. A UK treaty pension result should not be applied to a US account, and local treatment does not establish exemption for a US citizen or resident alien.
Review retirement accounts, foreign funds and company ownership with a US specialist. PFIC or foreign-entity classification and reporting can remain relevant even where a local proposal is described as tax-efficient.
