Salary versus business-income planning
Saudi Arabia's employment-income treatment is different from its rules for business activity and companies. A salary package, a freelance service and profits from a company do not all receive the same answer. Start by identifying the payer, activity and ownership.
Business tax can depend on non-Saudi ownership and other rules, while Zakat has a different base and scope. Source-country obligations may also remain. A structure should follow the actual activity, not an assumption that an employment-tax headline covers all income.
Country facts to keep in view
- Personal income tax
- 0% on employment incomeBusiness and permanent-establishment income is treated separately. Source-country and US obligations may remain.
- Company tax
- 20% on non-Saudi ownership shareSaudi/GCC ownership may instead attract Zakat, normally 2.5% of the adjusted base, not profits. Oil and other exceptions differ.
- Dividend tax
- 5% non-resident withholdingSaudi-source dividends paid to non-residents normally attract withholding. Treaty relief and resident/entity treatment require review.
A situation worth reviewing
An expatriate who moves for a salaried role and later starts consulting should review the new activity before invoicing. The employment position does not necessarily establish the treatment of the separate consultancy or a foreign company managed from Saudi Arabia.
For UK assets and UK connections
Review the UK departure year, retained work and income before changing investments or taking a pension payment. For Saudi pension treaty claims, HMRC describes country-specific residence evidence, including the relevant Iqama and residence statement in the stated circumstances.
Check the exact payment type and provider access. A Saudi residence document does not by itself establish that every UK pension or account has the same result.
For US persons
US citizenship or resident-alien status can keep US tax obligations relevant after a Saudi move. The IRS comprehensive income-tax treaty list does not include Saudi Arabia, so do not import a treaty answer from a different destination.
Review the actual US accounts, foreign-company interests and proposed investments with a US specialist. Provider access and the classification of a new structure should be settled before transferring or buying.
Before changing an arrangement
Compare the existing position with the proposed arrangement after fees, taxes and access restrictions. Keep a simple record of who owns each asset, where income arises and when it will be used. A lower headline rate is only useful if the account or regime qualifies and the structure remains appropriate when your plans change.

UK accounts
UK operating business! High priority
Your move and your company are separate tax questions
Running a UK company from Saudi Arabia can create local company or permanent-establishment questions while UK obligations continue.
A UK incorporated company does not automatically stop being UK resident when its owner moves. Assess where decisions and work occur, then check the country treaty and local business rules.
Worth exploring: Review actual governance, operations and remuneration before changing the ownership structure.
Ask a planner: Where will the business actually be managed and operated?

Review the entity and actual management
Foreign incorporation alone does not establish the combined tax result.
Review Saudi business activity, source and non-Saudi ownership alongside the existing company jurisdiction. Personal salary treatment is not a company exemption. US owners also need foreign-company reporting and classification review. No numerical saving is assigned.
Worth exploring: Consider a company only where its commercial and planning benefit justifies the obligations.
Ask a planner: Where is the entity managed and which people own or control it?
