Pensionado, work and investor routes
Pensionado residence is built around evidence of a qualifying lifetime pension. The remote-worker visa instead covers qualifying overseas work for a limited period, with an initial grant of up to nine months and one extension. These are different routes for different purposes.
Local employment requires its own assessment under labour-migration rules. Do not infer unrestricted work permission from residence. Confirm the current category, family documentation and any travel permission needed while an application is pending.

Location, medical access and household spending
A Panama City budget can differ substantially from a highland or coastal retirement budget. Compare rents, utilities, transport and the costs of reaching specialist services rather than treating a country average as a personal quote.
Investigate medical facilities and private insurance for the age and health history of the household. USD-based local spending does not remove currency risk for someone whose pensions are paid in sterling. Include travel and commitments in the departure country when testing the annual budget.

Adjust the lifestyle budgetConfirm healthcare access before relying on it
Compare access to routine care, specialists and emergency facilities in the actual location. Establish any public entitlement and obtain an insurance quotation suited to age, existing conditions and the intended geographical cover. The remote-worker route includes a medical-insurance requirement. A general budget estimate cannot substitute for the terms or premium of a personal policy.
Residence and citizenship are separate decisions
Naturalisation requires qualifying residence and further constitutional and procedural requirements. Check how your chosen permit counts towards any later application and what absences are allowed. Buying a property or paying an application fee is not an assurance that citizenship will follow.
Before leaving or returning to the UK
Review UK departure separately from Panama residence. The UK-Panama pension article permits source-country taxation, so do not assume a British pension becomes exempt because it is foreign-source in Panama. Ask British banks and custodians which services they can continue after your address and tax residence change.
US connections continue to matter
US citizenship generally continues worldwide-income and foreign-account reporting while you live in Panama. There is no comprehensive US-Panama income-tax treaty on the IRS list. Review US retirement accounts, retained foreign funds and any proposed foundation before implementation. Banking onboarding may require both local evidence and accurate US tax certification.
BRING THESE QUESTIONS
Make the conversation useful.
- Which Panama route fits my source of support and intended business or work activity?
- Which Panama location offers the medical access and household budget we need?
- Which commitments should I delay until permission and healthcare are confirmed?
